After the surrender of Japan in August 1945, the 38th parallel was officially made to separate Korea into two regions, South and North Korea to differentiate the country by their beliefs. North Korea officially became the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and South Korea became the Republic of Korea. Both side claim to be the government of Korea. During the Korean War both sides were trying to go over the border and invade.
After the Korean War in 1953, a new boundary was made, known as the Military Demarcation Line, or, MDL. Currently North Korea has more land and South Korea owns more ocean property.
